Myth 1:
Letter Writing is Outdated
Many students who are digital natives don’t see the need for letter writing. They believe it is an outdated practice only used by people who still read physical newspapers. This is far from the truth. Although many employers are using emails as a means of receiving letters, many still require you to submit a physical letter. Additionally, you will need letter writing skills if you are to write a clear and compelling email since the email is simply a letter sent, using an alternative media.
Myth 2:
The Address/ Heading goes on the RIGHT HAND side of the letter
The address can also be on the left depending on the type of letter. In elementary school, you were taught to place the heading on the right because the style was a friendly indented letter. Now it is time to move on… So your knowledge of the types of letter should grow too.
Myth 3:
There is a punctuation mark in the salutation between Dear and the Person’s Name E.g. Dear: George
Where did this idea come from? To be frank it isn’t even sensible. What would be the purpose of placing a punctuation mark between two words in a two word phrase? Place it at the end of your salutation and you will note, how much the flow of your letter is enhanced.
Myth 4: The FIRST letters of EACH word in the Complimentary Close is written with in CAPITAL/UPPERCASE Is it Yours Sincerely or Yours sincerely? It’s important to know…so you can avoid guessing. Sincerely is the most commonly used complimentary close. It like writing a sentence the first letter is capitalized and all others are common. Remember sincerely has an ‘e’ before the ‘ly’ suffix…it’s like that Netflix movie Anne with an E.
